What to Ask a Potential Education Advocate or Education Consultant

Asking the right questions when considering to involve an education advocate is essential to finding an advocate with expertise in a child's specific area of disability.

The decision to involve a special education advocate to facilitate the IEP or 504 process can be advantageous when attempting to obtain an educationally effective outcome for children with disabilities. Education advocates are dedicated to special education advocacy that is child focused and addresses the individual educational needs of the child. The role of an education advocate is extensive, so it is crucial that parents thoroughly interview potential advocates to find one that will be best suited to successfully assist the family navigate the special education system. Consider asking the following questions.

Questions Regarding the Qualifications of a Special Education Advocate

  • Is the advocate a Certified Special Education Advocate (CSEA or CEA)?
  • How many years of experience does the advocate have?
  • Does the advocate have training or a background in special education?
  • Does the advocate stay current with updated trainings and education?
  • What area of expertise does the advocate have in special education?
  • Inquire as to whether the advocate is active in professional associations and if so, which ones?
  • Inquire as to the advocates skills or knowledge regarding: evaluations, disabilities, IDEA, IEP's, 504's, FBA's, educational negotiations and alternative dispute resolution skills

Questions Related to an Education Advocate's Relevant Experience

  • Ask the advocate which school districts has he/she worked with and in particular has he/she had experience in the district in which the child in need of services resides?
  • How many cases has the advocate had in the last year?
  • Inquire if the advocate has knowledge about the child's disability
  • Does the advocate have past experiences with similar cases?

Business Practice Questions to Ask a Potential Special Education Advocate/Consultant

  • Will the advocate spend time with the child?
  • Does the advocate have relationships with any local attorneys, service providers or evaluators?
  • Ask what percentage of cases did parents get what they asked for or more?
  • Inquire as to the estimated amount of expenses that might be incurred during the process
  • What is the fee structure? Is there a set fee for services or an hourly rate?
  • Is the advocate willing to provide references?

The answers to these questions should assist parents in making a decision as to whether the advocate being interviewed is qualified, experienced and the best person to handle their child's case. Parents also need to consider their comfort level with the individual as they will be working together closely. The advocate's ability to clearly explain aspects of the case and available options in a manner that the parent understands is vital.

Advocates may provide legal information and assist in dispute resolution, but they should understand their professional limits. Advocates are not lawyers and cannot provide the same type of legal advice. A well trained advocate should know when an attorney's services are needed and accordingly make referrals.

Inquiring into an advocate's background and qualifications assures parents that they are making a properly informed decision to work with an advocate who is experienced in obtaining services that will meet their child's unique educational needs.
