Parents of children with Down Syndrome have many more decisions than picking a play group or a preschool.

Causes of Down Syndrome

  • An extra pair of chromosomes is one of the main causes of Down syndrome.
  • The chance of a child being born with Down syndrome increases with the age of the mother.
  • Down syndrome is not caused by the environment.
  • Down syndrome is not caused by dietary or other practices of the mother.

Physical Characteristics of Down Syndrome

  • Often short in stature
  • Slanted eyes
  • Crease across the palm
  • Legs and arms are short in proportion to body height
  • Exceptional space between big toe and the next
  • Neck appears short, thick

Common Medical Characteristics of Down Syndrome

  • Difficulty feeding/sucking as an infant
  • Heart problems are common
  • Increased incidence of leukemia
  • Increased incidence of Alzheimer’s Disease

Behavioral Characteristics of Down Syndrome

  • Very loving nature
  • Strong-willed/stubborn
  • Thrives with routine

Developmental Delays of Down Syndrome

  • Cognitive
  • Fine motor
  • Gross motor
  • Speech

Educational Support Services – Children with Down syndrome need a variety of support services beyond general educational curriculum. Parents may consider speech therapy as well as occupational and physical therapy to meet the developmental needs of the child. These services may be obtained from the local school district or a number of agencies such as Easter Seals.

Family Support – This condition is often misunderstood by family and friends. They may not know how to offer support. It is important, however, for the family of a child with Down syndrome to have a strong support system.
